Celeroton is part of a consortium that has been granted funding from the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the ARTES Competitiveness & Growth program to develop a turbo compressor, to be installed in a satellite.
The payload of high power telecommunication satellites are increasing. In parallel the development of very high throughput satellite (VHTS) missions leads to even more heat being dissipated. In order to increase the heat rejection capability of the radiator panels, the radiator temperature must be increased without increasing the temperature of the internal equipment. This can be achieved with a heat pump system (HPS) resulting in more heat being rejected compared to other thermal control systems with the same surface area.
The ultimate goal of the 4 year project is to increase the technology readiness level (TRL) of the turbo compressor.
The consortium consists of Celeroton, Thales Alenia Space France, the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR), Thales Cryogenics and Thales Alenia Space Belgium.
